Creepy Crawly Critters begins with a simple matcha ice cream for a grassy, green base for the bugs. There’s a splash of fresh orange juice added to balance the earthiness of the matcha green tea. Don Bugito’s edible insects (coconut toffee candied mealworms and chocolate-covered crickets) are stirred into the ice cream for an incredible textural crunch and a sweet earthy, nutty flavor.

We partnered with Don Bugito, one of the nation’s first edible bug farms, to create this flavor. Their delectable candied insects bring a nutty bite to Creepy Crawly Critters—and loads of nutrition. Insects are rich in protein, omega-3s, fiber, and amino acids, and they’ve been a part of Mexico’s culinary heritage dating back to the Aztecs. Today, Don Bugito’s founder, Monica Martinez, is on a mission to reintroduce the world to insects, crafting tasty confections that celebrate their natural earthy nuttiness. Think of crickets like pepitas; they taste just as delicious!
